The SAPA was created to evaluate phonemic and phonological awareness on K and 1st grade learners. The test is administered individually and the authors have made it available digitally at no charge to the public, which can be a great advantage for school implementation. SAPA can be administered in 15 to 20 minutes, orally, and it is designed to be used in conjunction with Professor Garfield’s Orson’s Farm, which is an educational online game that focus on the skills evaluated by SAPA.
There are six skillsets evaluated, and the assessment is criterion-referenced. Validation for this assessment was justified by the comparison of this test with several established phonological/phonemic tests, by concurrent validation with teachers’ ratings and positive concurrent results with reading and phonological awareness tests such as DIBELS and ELS.
